15 Year-old indigenous climate activist, Xiuhtezcatl Roske-Martinez has something to say.
On June 29th he stood before the United Nations General Assembly and spoke about today's climate crisis. In his bold speech, he didn't use notes or records.“What's at stake right now is the existence of my generation," he said. "In the last 20 years of negotiations, almost no agreements have been made on a bonding climate recovery plan."
This was his third time addressing the U.N, and just one of his many public efforts to raise awareness about climate change, which he calls "the defining issue of our time." His work in this area began when he was six years old, when he made his very first speech on the topic.
Recently he has given a TED Talk on the matter, he's served on Obama's 2013 Youth Council, and he is currently working as a Youth Director of the non-profit organization Earth Guardians. Several months ago, the production company BLKFLM made a short film about his story.
All in all, the courage of this articulate young man is very impressive. He is just one example of how a creative young person can use their voice and talents to spread awareness about the defining issue of our time: the criminal destruction of the environment.
