WHAT I'VE DISCOVERED SO FAR

LIGHTWORKS

Great features. Lots of options.

A free software that has been used in the production of movies such as Pulp Fiction.

Although there is a learning curve in using it (Looks very complicated to use!)

It does come with some limitations though.

You have to make an account on their website and update your license every week.

While there are a large number of inputs available, you can only export in 720 p MP4 format.

Supported on Mac, Windows and Linux

LEARNING CURIVE: Supposedly difficult to use, according to reviews. I watched a video and it looked confusing.

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Intel i7 chipset or faster, fast AMD chipset
3GB RAM or higher
Two high-resolution displays (1920 x1080) or above
PCI Express graphics card (NVIDIA or ATI) with 1GB or higher and support for DirectX 9 (Windows only)
Separate media and system drives (these can be internal or external as long as the the interface is suitably fast
Compatible sound card
200MB Disk space for Lightworks installation
(Optional) a Lightworks Console.
(Optional) a Lightworks keyboard.

DAVINCI RESOLVE 12

Efficient and not too hard to learn. Supports cutting, trimming, video overlays, transitions, multiple audio tracks, and other effects.

Good system for color correction.

Can crop, rotate, fade, mess with opacity, zoom in and out.

Tons of transitions, titles, and other special effects.

Lack of support for audio formats other than .wav files. Mp3 files cannot be imported. (but you could use audacity to convert a Mp3 file to a Wav.)

Supported on both Mac and Windows.

LEARNING CURVE: According to the reviews I've read, it's not hard to learn. But some of the coloration techniques might be weird. Also read it requires a pretty powerful system to run it.

System Requirements:

Mac: OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite, 16 GB RAM recommended;

Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit SP1 or Windows 10, 16 GB RAM recommended;

Linux CentOS 6.4, 32 GB RAM recommended

(Having trouble finding more information on this)

HIT FILM 4 EXPRESS

A free software with lots of special effects and features available.

Some of the features you have to pay extra for though.

The only weird thing is that you have to apply for a license key to upload files to youtube. But the key doesn't cost anything, it's just a bit of a hassle.

VSDC

While it has received many positive recommendations, it apparently comes with a bunch of adware. So avoid it.
