AUGUSTUS CAESAR - READING LIST

THE FALL OF THE REPUBLIC AND THE RISE OF AN EMPIRE

The study of Rome and the fall of the Roman Republic is very relevant to our time today. The Roman Republic was a representative system that failed and was replaced by an authoritarian system under the guidance of Augustus Caesar. This is not a novel event in history. This has happened time and time again. This was the case in Athens Greece as well as in Weimar Germany. And why is this relevant to study today? Because most of today's world super powers are representative democracies.

Now at World Future Fund it is our hope that the problems of our time can be solved through a peaceful and democratic process. Indeed we have published a manual online for U.S. citizens to encourage such action. However, it is very important to study what can happen when democracies fail.

When the Roman Republic was in its death throes, it was plagued by endless military imperialism and bloody civil war. But things changed when Augustus Caesar shifted Rome from a Republic to an Empire. Augustus Caesar is an interesting figure in history, because he ended the Republic with promises to save it. This is why he was much more successful than his predecessor, Julius Caesar.

We believe that in our time, if a powerful figure steps forward to crush democracy and set up their own authoritarian regime, they will do so in the name of "protecting democracy." And already we see a lot of this today, with governments crushing civil liberties in the name of saving them.

What is important to understand is that Augustus Caesar did not act unilaterally. He had tremendous levels of support. He was even worshipped as a living god. And for many people, the end of the Republic was not mourned, but welcomed. The reign of Augustus Caesar helped create the "Pax Romana," a 200 year long period of relative peace and stability in Rome.

So we believe it is important to study Rome's shift from a republic to empire, as well as to study the personality of the man Augustus Caesar himself. To do this, we have helped create a reading list on the subject. Below we have compiled a list of books on amazon, free books online, primary historical sources, free documentaries and artwork.
